My brief interaction with the Southern White Rhinoceros at the Singapore Zoo was a mesmerising one. While feeding them rock melons, these creatures with such tough amoured skins and powerful-looking horns waited calmly and slurped slowly. Those gentle eyes and slimy flat lips made my heart swoon and reminded me how much they should be cherished.
Rhinoceros are becoming endangered or even extinct due to poaching. Selling up to hundreds of thousand dollars per horn due to high demand caused by people’s misbeliefs. Horns are made of keratin but are highly prized in traditional medicine. Recently, it has also became a status symbol to display success and wealth. However, every horn hacked off a Rhinoceros will lead to them bleeding to death and each death draws the plight of extinction even nearer.
As consumers, we can always play our part in making well-informed decisions while buying something. As the saying goes, we protect what we love, and we love what we understand. I hope this painting will encourage people to learn more about Rhinoceros through documentaries and visits to sanctuaries or zoos so that more people would love and advocate for them.
